Hello, Friday of week 2. How are you?

On a sunny, hot Friday in September, the newsroom is virtually empty. Jessica and Marquis are my only companions as I sit at my desk getting work done. Kimberly, our ad manager, must left with her twin sister, and the newsroom has that calm feeling of an office that is emptying out as everyone exits into Friday, prepared to enjoy their weekend. I like it like this.

This semester, the newsroom feels different. We come to work and there is a lighter feeling in the air. That sense of rush and panic has not hit us yet, and if things continue to move along the way they have been, we may never hit that feeling throughout the entire semester.

Imagine getting an email from our adviser letting us know that there were no more stories available for writers to grab in our workflow management tool. That has never happened before; in prior semesters we’ve had to beg people to take stories. Now, the stories are getting snatched up as fast as we can add them into the system.

I love this feeling. I love coming in this newsroom to work. I love the group of peers I have on my team this semester. I love my job. I love this life.

Student journalism: it’s not just a job, it’s an adventure.

a week later…

Has it really been over a week since I last posted?

My intention for this blog was to post something every single day. I could sit here, make an excuse and say, “Something always gets in the way,” but the truth is, writers are always writing, and I should always be writing on this blog.

When Kate initially gave us the instructions for creating and maintaining our blogs, she said that we should write the blogs as if we were writing them for students in J1 who were interested in reading about what it is like to work on a college paper. I really want to be able to provide that insight.

Time is of the essence in journalism, and most especially in student journalism, where you might be juggling 5 classes at once. I started the semester out with five, but I had to drop one of them because it was on a the Compton campus¬†two days a week, and that was two days I wasn’t at Torrance and wasn’t able to fully focus on getting information and interviews for my stories.

My schedule is now in a place where I can better manage my time, yet I still fail on occasion. I’m taking two online classes (Psych 5 and English 1C) and two journalism production classes (J11 – newspaper production and J14 – Multimedia Journalism), and what I notice is that journalism tends to take over my life, leaving me remembering that I do have two other classes often at the last minute before assignments are do.

I want to get better at this.

Week seven is a little late in the game to be thinking so deeply on this topic, but I am actually getting good grades in the two non-journalism classes (An ‘A’ in English and a very high B in psychology). Still, I am always assessing and always looking for ways to improve my game.

The other improvement that I want to make is daily blogging. Through blogging, I can improve my writing skills. I can also share with you what this crazy journalism student life is like.

And that is what this is all about anyway, right?
