In case you missed it one of the millions of times it’s probably floated down your timeline at this point, Chelsea Clinton is pregnant.

Clinton announced she was pregnant with her first child on Thursday while speaking at the Lower Eastside Girls Club in New York City as part of the “No Ceilings Conversation” series.

Clinton and husband Marc Mezvinsky are expecting the baby “later this year,” she said.

I saw the post float down my timeline from various news outlets, and I also paid attention to the reaction to the news. There were people on my timeline who wanted to know why this is news, and I had basically the same question.

What is our obsession with ‘celebrity’ culture, and why has this become a large part of what is considered ‘news’ today?

What do you think? Talk to me in the comments.

  1. It’s both celebrity AND power culture. Our new royalty are ‘democratically’ elected and have dynasties. In the grand scheme of things, it might not be important outside of the normal importance a child has to their family and friends, or she might be a Presidential grandchild (or some variation on ‘child of a powerful politician.’) It’s so hard to say with the political elite.

You know what’s funny, Jenn? When I went to Google to see who else had info, the first news result was a USA Today article that said almost exactly that.:

For Americans, this is might be the equivalent of a royal baby on the way: Chelsea Clinton announced Thursday that she’s pregnant with her first child.

I suppose that is part of the fascination, but it still makes me wonder, why is there a fascination at all? Whether it be presidential or royalty, or Kim K and Kanye, why do we care so much what happens in the private lives of these people?
